Governors move against Amaechi over tenure elongation bid

The bid by the Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, to elongate his stay as head of the NGF is the reason behind the move of his colleagues against him.
This revelation is contrary to the position of Amaechi that his colleagues were against him because of his support for the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Sources within the NGF told The Eagle Online on Saturday that Amaechi’s tenure had elapsed but he has been unwilling to call for another election to elect his successor.
The source said though the election of the leader of the NGF had always been by consensus, there was the need for the incumbent to call for a meeting where the decision would be taken.
Amaechi has, however, failed to do this despite pressure from his colleagues.
One of the sources said Amaechi has overstayed his stay in office.
The source said: “No one is at war with Amaechi because he is Jonathan’s man.
“That position is untrue.
“What we all frown at, which has necessitated the moves against him, is the fact that he does not want to create a level-playing ground by stepping aside after the expiration of his tenure.
“We are all equals.
“So that position cannot be an exclusive preserve of a single governor and that is why we are moving against him.
“Amaechi should not make the attempt to mislead Nigerians.
“None of us has a personal animosity against him but he should act like a democrat by leaving office gloriously instead of trying to be a sit-tight NGF chairman.”
