73-year-old monarch shot dead in palace

A traditional ruler, Chief Kayode Adeshina, the Onimole of Lagos was on Thursday shot dead in his palace by unknown gunmen.
Adeshina, said to be 73 years old, was a member of the Lagos State White Cap Chiefs, a distinguished traditional title in the state.
Adeshina was said to be fast asleep in his “Onimole” palace when two armed men stormed his palace about 3am and shot him in his bedroom.
Describing how his father was killed, Oyinlola Ikuforiji, a daughter of the deceased, said: “The two gun men came straight into my father’s bedroom and they ordered him and one of his children to lay down flat.
“My father was rudely woken up and a gun was pointed at him.
“He pleaded with the gunmen to spare his life but they demanded money.
“He was shot when he told them that he had no money.”
Oyinlola said the gunmen fled the palace after they shot her father in the chest, while they also stole her brother’s mobile phone.
She said: “The armed robbers locked us inside the palace and fled with the keys.
“My father was dying, bleeding profusely and we managed to shout for help.
“When we were certain the gunmen had left, we kept shouting and hitting the door as the gunmen had locked us inside and took the keys to the house away.”
It was gathered that residents heard the screams coming from the palace and decided to break down the door.
The residents also assisted in rushing the old man to the hospital but he died shortly after.
Reacting to the incident, Ngozi Braide, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, said the police has made arrests in connection with the killing.
Braide said: “Adeshina was killed by some gunmen who broke into his house earlier on Thursday.
“After shooting Adeshina, they seized the phone belonging to one of his sons, who was with him at the time.
“Arrests have already been made and investigation is ongoing to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.”
Also reacting to the death of the chief, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, said: “It is very unfortunate that this murder happened when Lagosians are commending the state government over the peace and security in the state.
“It is very unfortunate and shocking that at a time when the state is enjoying relative peace that such gruesome murder took place.
“We prayed God give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss while we are appealing to the police to uncover the murderers within the shortest possible time.”
