Ansaru, a splinter group from Boko Haram, said on Saturday it has killed seven foreign hostages it was holding.
The group said the seven hostages, made up of a Briton, a Greek, an Italian, one Filipino and three Lebanese, were killed as a result of attempted rescue operations by security agencies.
In a statement on Saturday, Ansaru said: “British and Nigerian security forces killed some Muslims in their attempt to rescue the Christian hostages, therefore we killed the Christians.”
But a spokesman for the Joint Task Force, Colonel Mohammed Yerima, denied any move to rescue the foreigners who work for Setraco, a construction firm.
