Police move LEADERSHIP editors into cell for overnight detention

Two editorial staff of LEADERSHIP newspapers have been moved into the cell of the Nigeria Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The LEADERSHIP newspaper staff, who are to be detained overnight are the Group News Editor, Tony Amokeodo; and Political Reporter, Chibuzor Ukaibe.
Amokeodo and Ukaibe, who have been at the police headquarters alongside the Director, Human Capital, Chinyere Fred-Adegbulugbe; and Managing editor, Chucks Ohuegbe, are, ostensibly, to be detained overnight.
Fred-Adegbulugbe and Ohuegbe have been released to go home.
The LEADERSHIP newspaper staff had reported at the Force Headquarters on Monday morning based on an invitation by the police over a story the newspaper carried last week.
The story had to do with a purported directive by the Presidency that security agents should move against the leaders of the yet-to-be-registered All Progressives Congress and the opposition in general ahead of the 2015 elections.
A bromide of the letter from the Presidency was attached to the story.
But the Presidency has since dismissed the story and declared the letter as fake.
But the police wants the newsmen at the LEADERSHIP to disclose the source of the information and letter, a demand the journalists described as unethical.
“We told them that it would be unethical to disclose our source and asked them to charge us to court, if they wanted,” Fred-Adegbulugbe said. “They said they wanted to have the document. We said the bromide had been published and wondered why they were making such a fuss, since they said the document was a work of fiction.”
The detention of the newsmen has been condemned by several bodies.
