Fake Lagos prince arrested for defrauding women.
A 36-year-old man, Olalekan Kareem, is in the police custody for allegedly defrauding women.
Kareem was arrested close to the Redeemed Christian Church of God Camp along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway recently by police officers attached to the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, following a report by one of his victims that he used a false Facebook account to deceive and extort more than N200,000 from her.
The victim, one Adenike Okunola, formerly a National Youth Service Corp member, alleged that Kareem claimed to be a Lagos prince on his Facebook account and went by the name Prince Adeyinka Oyekun.
Okunola stated that Kareem convinced her to part with N200,000 bribe to aid him facilitate a job placement with the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja.
The police later discovered that Okunola, a married woman, was also economical with the truth as she had claimed on Facebook that she was single.
In her statement to the police, Okunola said: “On November 15th this year, I withdrew the sum of N235,000 from my account without the knowledge of my husband.
“I also took some of my jewelries, my two blackberry phones, an ATM card as well as my certificates and I came to Ojota.
“Kareem had planned to travel with me to Abuja in order to process the job.
“However, while we were driving along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, he pretended that his car was having fault and ordered me to alight and push the car for him.
“When I alighted from the car, Kareem zoomed off with all my money and other personal items.”
Kareem was not however done with his fraudulent acts as he successfully deceived three other ladies by employing the same trick of securing non existent jobs for them in Abuja.
His other victims included ladies simply identified as Folashade, Ganiyat, Atinuke and Fadeke.
The ladies were NYSC members on community development assignment to Ogun State.
They were equally in his vehicle from Lagos.
He made away with their laptops, cash, certificates, ATM cards, bread toasting machine and phones.
It was also gathered that Kareem on November 12, 2012 had also lured Miss Atinuke, who boarded his car from the Berger area of Lagos State with the same offer.
However on their way, Kareem pretended that he had a flat tyre and asked Atinuke to alight.
As she did, Kareem allegedly drove off with her phones worth N104,000, ATM cards NYSC discharge certificate and other personal belongings.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, stated that the police officers from the Ogudu Police Station trailed the suspect to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and laid an ambush, which led to his arrest.
Braide said the suspect will be charged to court soon.
