The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation filling station in Bauchi, Bauchi State, which was engulfed by fire on Saturday afternoon, could lead to further hike in the price of petroleum products in the city and beyond.
Sources at the scene told The Eagle Online that the fire started at about 3:08pm.
As at press time, there was no fire fighting team at the scene.
It was learnt that the fire started from a building by the service area.
The fire kept spreading as staff and customers battled to contain it, it was learnt.
As at press time, there was no fire fighting team at the scene. However, as a result of the fire incident, there are fears the cost of the prices of petroleum products, especially petrol, could rise.
Before the fire incident, the NNPC was the only filling station that was dispensing fuel at the government-controlled price of N97 per litre.
Other petrol stations, as shown in one of the photographs accompanying this story, sell for between N125 and N130.
And unlike other parts of the country where the petrol metre reads N97 and the cost of dispensed fuel is calculated after sale, the filling stations in Bauchi carry the actual price the product is sold for even when it is not at the government-controlled prices.
