Police corporal arrested for stealing motorcycle

A corporal, Goroye Folagbade, attached to the Ikorodu Divisional Police Station, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been arrested for allegedly stealing and selling a motorcycle.
The motorcycle is said to belong to one Saheed Owolabi.
Policemen attached to the station, led by the Operations Officer, Ebuwa Vincent, seized the motorcycle from Owolabi last month for allegedly violating the Lagos State traffic law prohibiting motorcycles, popularly referred to as okada, from plying some routes in the state.
It was gathered that Vincent could not produce the motorcycle afterwards, claiming that it had been taken to Alausa secretariat whereas the motorcycle had been stolen and sold.
Owolabi said he made several attempts to recover his motorcycle but to no avail but was shocked when he found his motorcycle with another commercial motorcyclist, Ismail Olomitutu, at Anibaba area of Ikorodu on January 10, 2013.
He raised the alarm.
Owolabi reported the case to the police.
Olomitutu, when interrogated, confessed that it was Folagbade who sold the motorcycle to him for N55,000.
Following Olomitutu’s confession, Folagbade was summoned and also interrogated by the Divisional Crime Officer of Igbogbo Divisional Headquarters after which he confessed to stealing the bike.
A police source said: “Corporal Folagbade does not know how to ride a motorcycle so he probably must have asked Ismail to come for the motorcycle inside the police station when no one was suspecting.
“Even the operations officer in charge may have connived with him to dispatch the motorcycle because he lied to the owner of the motorcycle that it had been taken to Alausa secretariat.”
The source added that Folagbade said he stole the motorcycle to fend for his pregnant wife.
The case is said to be under investigation.
