Lagos traffic alert as Clinton, Jonathan, Fashola open Eko Atlantic City project

This is a warning if you have businesses to transact on Lagos Island in Lagos State on Thursday (today): be prepared for heavy traffic.
The alert is premised on the visit to Lagos Island by former President of the United States of america, Bill Clinton; and Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Clinton; Jonathan; and their host, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, are due to commission the Phase 1 of the Eko Atlantic City project.
The project, an idea of the administration of Fashola, seeks to provide a new town in the state.
It is aimed at renewing Lagos Island, which has gradually been crowded by failure to comply with town planning rules and also to provide mass accommodation.
Major roads on Lagos Island are due to be closed before and throughout the duration of the programme.
The last time Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, visited Lagos Island for a ceremony involving largely women groups, traffic was at a standstill for over nine hours.
Major roads were closed to traffic before and during the event.
It was only after the First Lady left that the roads were opened.
The after effect of the closure of the roads left many commuters and motorists out until the wee hours of the following day.

Explosion kills three in Borno

The Joint Task Force in Borno State on Wednesday said that three persons were killed when an explosive device was detonated in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The spokesman of the JTFLieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, said the explosion occurred around the Post Ofice area of Maiduguri at about 1pm.
Musa said the explosive device was targeted at a patrol team of the JTF.
He said: “An explosive devise targeted at the JTF patrol team exploded at the Post Office round about in Maiduguri at about 1.00 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The explosion led to the death of three civilians, comprising the bomber and two others, and a JTF vehicle was damaged.
“Consequently, the JTF reiterates its determination to ensure the maintenance of law, order and safety of lives and property of law abiding residents of Borno State.
“The attention of the JTF has been drawn to some leaflets allegedly printed and circulated by Boko Haram terrorists group containing a message from their leader Abubakar Shekau.
“The message contained threats and warning to civil servants, politicians, traditional rulers and security agents that the sect has not made any reconciliation with the government and has not declared a cease fire.
“The JTF wishes to advise law abiding members of the public to disregard such publications and consider them as part of the terrorists propaganda strategy to keep the civil populace in captivity.”

N200m demanded for abducted expatriantes in Bayelsa

The yet-to-be-identified gunmen who kidnapped six expatriates in Bayelsa State have made a demand of N200 million.
The expatriates were abducted off the coastline of Bayelsa State by the gunmen.
They were made up of three Ukrainians, two Indians and a Russian.
They are all sailors.
There were said to be 15 sailors on the vessel that operates from Lagos State.
The abduction was carried out by about 10 gunmen who stormed the vessel on high sea.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Police Command, Fidelis Odunna, confirmed the development on Wednesday.
Odunna said: “We have already dispatched our men to track down the kidnappers and contact has been established with them and they are asking for N200 million.”

SSS parades three terrorists who plot to attack Israeli facility, Babangida, Dasuki

An Iran trained Nigerian terrorist, Abdullahi Mustapha Berende, was on Wednesday paraded by the Department of State Security Service for allegedly planning to kill former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki.
Berende, from Ilorin, Kwara State, 50, was described as the local leader of Shiite Sect was also accused of espionage and plan to attack Israeli intelligence facility in Lagos State.
Addressing newsmen, the Deputy Director, Public Relations of the DSS, Marylin Ogar, said Berende and two others, Olayinka Saka and Saheed Aderemi Adewumi, had made confessional statements to the service.
Berende told newsmen that he was in Iran on a six-month course in Modern Shi’a Islamic Teaching (Da’awa) at Imam Khomeni University, in 2006, adding that it was in 2011 when he returned for further studies that he got recruited by some Iranian elements.
He also confessed to being trained on the use of AK 47 assault rifle, pistols, production and detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices.
According to him, his mandate included providing specific details on targets like USAID, Max, Zim international Shipping Company, A.A Consulting, Peace Corps and the Jewish Cultural Centre (Chabad) in Lagos State.
Berende said he also got was mandate to establish a terrorist cell in the South Western part of Nigeria with particular emphasis on Lagos, adding that he recruited Saka and Adewumi as part of the network.
Lagos, he disclosed, was chosen as point of launch of the attack because his handlers believed that the Israelis have an intelligence facility there that is being used to spy on Iran.
Asked why he targeted Babangida and Dasuki, he said he was asked to provide names of prominent Nigerians who, if attacked, could unsettle the West.
The terrorist said his lieutenants had successfully conducted surveillance and gathered relevant data on all their targets, IBB and Dasuki inclusive, for possible attack.
Speaking on the sources of funding, Berende admitted receiving $4,000 upon completion of his training, €3,500 in April 2012 at the meeting in Dubai and another $20,000, out of which he was to use $10,000 to relocate to Lagos, complete his house and rent a shop as a cover up.
He however said he regretted his action and pleaded for mercy.
The three suspects, Ogar said, will soon be charged to court.

Jonathan approves N384b to settle PHCN staff

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved N384 billion for all outstanding payments to staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, disclosed this on Wednesday In Abuja.
Wogu said the payment will commence on Thursday. Staff of PHCN had been at loggerheads with the government over the outstanding payments.

10 killed, four injured as robbers place obstruction on road

A gang of robbers have caused a major accident along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, leading to the death of 10 people.
Four others were also injured.
The accident occurred early on Wednesday at about 2am.
The victims are believed to be night travelers.
It was gathered that the robbers placed an obstruction on the road, which led to a major accident. Confirming the incident, a Federal Road Safety Corps official said: “Ten men were killed, while four others were injured in a crash along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, at Km 94, before Kateri town, around 2am early this morning.
“Robbers had blocked the road and a Mark Trailer Open body with registration number KMC607XA, with 14 male passengers ran into the obstruction.
“Victims were taken to St. General Hospital.”
