The deputy governor, who donated money to affected families, lauded officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, Katsina State Rehabilitation and Emergency Relief Agency and other health workers for their support to the victims.
Garba said the injured persons with severe cases that needed special attention would be referred to tertiary hospitals, adding that government would foot the bills.
The gang of bandits had raided villages in Faskari and Sabuwa Local Government Areas of Katsina State, killing people and burning houses and shops.

Clockwise: Applicants at the National Stadium, Lagos; some of the injured applicants in Abuja; and exhausted applicants in Lagos, on Saturday

The applicants reportedly paid the sum of N1,000 as application fee.

Millions of job seekers had thronged venues of the exercise, mostly stadia, for the exercise.

Seven were confirmed dead after a stampede at the National Stadium, Abuja, venue of the exercise in the Federal Capital Territory.

The 60,000-seater  stadium was filled up.

Each candidate was required to wear a white T-shirt, boxer shorts, socks and tennis shoe for the exercise.

The candidates, our correspondent gathered, were tested in logical reasoning, English language and mathematics.

The applicants, mostly youths, had certificates ranging from master’s degree to bachelor’s degree, Higher National Diploma, National Certificate in Education, National Diploma and Senior Secondary School Leaving Certificate.

“The other gates were locked and everybody struggled through the only available gate. Not everybody took the examination because there was no space; there was no space for those with HND and O’level. There was space for those with B.Sc.”

The Public Relations Officer, NIS, Rivers State Command, Mr. Abang Bisong, said the stampede was caused by the unexpected number of applicants that turned out for the exercise.

Bisong explained that while the NIS was expecting 20,000 applicants, about 35,000 job seekers, which was beyond the capacity of the stadium, showed up for the fitness and written tests.

Similarly, they were reports that three pregnant women died at the exam venue in Edo State.

As of 5pm, the exercise was still ongoing.

 Woman slumps in Oyo

A major tragedy was averted at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium centre of the aptitude test in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, when a woman slumped during a stampede, while two others required emergency treatment for exhaustion.

More than 22,500 registered applicants were present at the venue.

The woman who slumped during the stampede could not be identified while it took officials of the Oyo State Ambulance Service about 20 minutes to revive her.

 Four slump in Osun

At least, four applicants who were among thousands of youths seeking employment with the NIS slumped at St. Charles’ Grammar School, Osogbo-venue of the recruitment exercise.

The applicants slumped due to exhaustion.

Thousands of the applicants arrived at the venue as early as 6:30am to sit for the examination but the first batch did not sit for the test until around 3:30pm.

Applicants wait for nine hours in Bayelsa

About 6,000 applicants sat the recruitment examination of the Samson Siasia Stadium venue of the exams.

Malaysian plane is deep inside the sea, all 239 passengers are dead – T.B Joshua

TB-JOSHUA-2

The General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet TB Joshua has revealed that the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 which left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on Saturday crashed into the sea.

The prophet said all the 239 people on board and crew members have passed on.

”The plane concerned is deep inside the sea. Some of the particles will be seen on the surface of the sea any moment from now.

“May their souls rest in peace; we pray the Lord gives the family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss. Our prayer and love are always with them, the nation of Malaysia and other countries that had passengers on this flight”.

It will be recalled that few days ago, a Malaysian Witch doctor had also said the plane ‘was either in the air or in the sea.’

However, US Counter-terrorism officials now suspect that the plane flew for a total of five hours based on data, automatically downloaded and sent back to Rolls Royce – the manufacturers of the Boeing 777′s engines.

They are now pursuing the astonishing possibility that the plane and its 239 passengers were diverted to an undisclosed location ‘with the intention of using it later for another purpose.

“The pilot or somebody else turned the planes’ transponders off to avoid detection and flew it to another location,” Malaysian newspapers report.

Presidency defends Abacha’s Centenary Award Honor

President Jonathan's spokesman Reuben Abati has explained why late military dictator Gen. Sani Abacha was given the controversial Centenary Award, saying that the government was in no way supporting corrupt practices...

"This (award) does not in any means translate to supporting sharp practices or corrupt practices. It is important to make the clear distinction in this regard.

I think it is important to make the necessary distinction here. The centenary award, like every award, has its own criteria. That centenary award was in relation to the amalgamation, the national unity, the history of Nigeria and the roles played by certain individuals.

The centenary award was not a test of sainthood. In giving the award to the former Head of State, Gen. Abacha, the committee in charge made it very clear that the award in the category in which the former Head of State appeared was awarded with regard to the contributions of those individuals in keeping Nigeria together."........

You will find out that under that category, there were largely former Heads of State, persons who have at one time or the other presided over Nigeria and under whose watch, in spite of whatever challenges they might have faced, helped to sustain the unity of the country and helped to defend the integrity and sovereignty of the country. That was a specific criterion in this particular category. Of course, every award at all, be it for beauty or any other thing has its own criteria.” Reuben Abati tells Punch

Enugu Government House Under Heavy Attack By 50 Armed men

Enugu Government House came under heavy attack early Saturday morning by armed men numbering about 50.

The attack, which created so much tension, was however foiled by security personnel attached to the Government House.

The mission of the young men, who were armed with several machetes and flags with different inscriptions and insignia was not known.

DailyPost learnt that there was a heavy shooting by the security operatives comprising policemen, men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Soldiers who succeeded in preventing the hoodlums from entering the Government House.

An eye witness stated that several machetes were recovered from the fleeing members of the gang.

The hoodlums were said to have parked their vehicles along the Nza Street and marched to the Government House gate where they met the security operatives.

The young men tied red bands similar to those of the Bakasi Boys and MASSOB operating in Onitsha and Aba, a development that forced many to described them as MOSSOB members.

The spokesman of the Enugu Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the attack to DailyPost said “no fewer than three persons have been arrested by the operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, just as investigations into the incident have commenced”.

Also speaking, Mr. Chukwudi Achife, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sulluvan Chime, disclosed that the attack occurred at about 4.30 am.

He revealed that a group of young men numbering about 50 and carrying matchetes and cutlasses invaded the Government House and tried to force their way in.

Achife disclosed that the hoodlums were immediately engaged by the security personnel who shot dead one person and arrested three.

According to him, one of the security personnel attached to government house was injured in the attack.

He added that the arrested persons along with some of the weapons recovered (matchetes) have since been handed over to the Enugu Police Command for further investigations.

They were said to have escaped the bullets fired by security operatives as they reportedly wore local bullet proofs popularly called Odieshi in Igbo.

Centenary: Outrage as Abacha’s children attack Soyinka

Abacha

Two children of the late maximum ruler, General Sani Abacha, on Wednesday singled out Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, for what can be described as a venomous attack.

While Gumsu, one of the late dictator’s daughters,  took to her Twitter page to pass disparaging remarks on Soyinka, his brother Sadiq chose blogs and online forums to snarl abuses at him.

According to them, their grouse against Soyinka borders on a statement he made that he rejected the centenary award by the Federal Government because of the inclusion of their late father’s name on the list of awardees.

Soyinka had said it was an insult for him to be listed alongside Abacha for the award saying, “I reject my share of this national insult. We are speaking of a man who placed this nation under siege during an unrelenting reign of terror that is barely different from the current rampage of Boko Haram.

“It is this very psychopath that was recently canonised by the government of Goodluck Jonathan in commemoration of 100 years of Nigerian trauma.”

But Gumsu,  who threw the first salvo,  said in her own wisdom, Soyinka’s statement was “stupid, foolish and insignificant.”

“Someone should tell Soyinka that I liked his books when I was younger but that is where it ends. Today, I reject his stupid, foolish and insignificant statement. I am not perfect, nor was my late dad. We are human beings. God’s creation!  We are not perfect just like our fingers aren’t equal. Take it or leave it,” she tweeted.

In what appeared as a coordinated attack, Sadiq took time to write a 1,762-word open letter in which he cast aspersions on Soyinka.

While claiming to be “lecturing” Soyinka, Sadiq said he believes that the professor’s “brilliance is not perfection” adding that the Nobel Laureate should desist from always “pouncing” on his late father.

While defending his dictator father, he described Soyinka as a “common writer” who has grown old and fast “losing his grasp of reality.”

“Here I find myself defending my father 15 years after his death because some of you have no one else to pounce on, or rather, you have chosen a dead person to keep pouncing on over and over again when you have more than an array of contestants,” Sadiq added.

But no sooner had their bombshells surfaced online than a barrage of criticisms began to trail their actions.

Many were quick to remind the children of the autocratic ruler that the freedom of expression they were exercising online by attacking Soyinka was actually repressed during their father’s dictatorial rule.

A political blogger, Babatunde Rosanwo, said it was appalling that Abacha’s children were running commentaries on highly respected individuals in the country.

He reminded the two siblings that their father brought much “sorrow” to the nation while his reign lasted.

“When Abacha’s children begin to run commentary on Wole Soyinka, you wonder if they were too young to know their father. There is no need to remind the Abachas of the sorrow their father brought upon Nigeria.

“I blame President Jonathan for  his short memory. Today it is Wole Soyinka, tomorrow it may be Gani Fawehinmi. The Abachas are enjoying the freedom of expression their father repressed,” Rosanwo added.

A few hours after Sadiq’s article was circulated online, a blogger, Ayo Sogunro, who described himself as a young Nigerian who sees Soyinka as his “socio-political” father, took to his blog to defend the literary icon.

In his 1,454-word blog post on ayosogunro.com, he said the Abacha reign “have been the worst years of my material life as a Nigerian citizen”,  noting that the attacks on Soyinka amounted to a “misguided filial bravery.”

“You (Sadiq Abacha) can never eradicate the infamy of your father’s legacy by trying to point out the failings of another Nigerian. No length of finger pointing will wash away the odious feeling the name Abacha strikes up in the mind of the average Nigerian.

“Wole Soyinka did not antagonise your father just because he was a military man—Wole Soyinka was against your father’s inhumanity. Your father was intolerant of criticism beyond belief,” Sogunro wrote in his blog post.

Lending a voice to the outrage, a public relations practitioner, Isioma Osaje, wrote on Twitter that no matter the amount  of mudslinging from the late dictator’s family, they cannot distort history.

She said, “You (Sadiq and Gumsu) should know that it is unfortunate that he is your father. But Abacha was everything he is accused of and more. A thief is a thief, father or not. His sins are not your sins unless you were cohorts and while it is admirable that you defend your father, it does not change history.”

Also, one Tobi Amoo, who claimed to have once attended the same school with Sadiq, cautioned the duo against further spewing rubbish in an attempt to get back at Soyinka.

“Sadiq Abacha was actually a year my senior in Maitama during his father’s terrible reign,” he said. “If my father were a thief and murderer, I’d keep quiet when people talked about it, not spew crap as if na only me sabi speak oyinbo.

“If your father is a thief and you speak to support him, you are a thief also. It’s the same freedom that Wole Soyinka and others like the late Gani Fawehinmi fought for that allows these badly-brought up children to open their gob and spout rubbish.”
